Activating your licence

There is no account and no login. Your licence key is emailed to you after purchase, and you activate by pasting it into the app.

Paste the key into the activation screen on first launch. The app contacts the licensing server once to register this device.

Each licence covers three simultaneous activations — enough for a main PC, a laptop and a media server. If you need more than three, get in touch.

Copying the key, or the activation file, to a fourth machine does not get you a fourth activation. The limit is enforced on the server, and the activation file is cryptographically bound to the specific machine it was issued for, so it cannot be reused elsewhere even if copied.

Use Settings → License → Deactivate this device on the old machine before activating on the new one. That frees the activation slot immediately, with no need to contact support.

There is a limit on how often a licence’s devices can change in a month. It is well above what replacing a computer or reinstalling needs. If the app says the licence has been activated on too many devices recently, email support@fileverdict.com and we will sort it out.

Your settings and presets do not travel with the licence — copy the app-data folder across for those (on Windows, %APPDATA%\FileVerdict\). Any API keys need re-entering, since those live in the operating system’s credential store rather than in a file.

You can see your licence, and free a device you can no longer reach, without contacting anyone.

  1. Go to licensing.fileverdict.com/account.
  2. Enter the email address you bought FileVerdict with. We email you a 6-digit code.
  3. Enter the code. You will see every licence bought with that address: the key, the plan, when it expires, and the devices using it.

To free a device, choose Free this device. FileVerdict on that computer stops working the next time it checks in (within 14 days at most) and asks for the key again. You can free up to three devices per licence every 30 days; after that, email support and we will help.

There is no password and no account. A code works once and expires after 10 minutes.

From the same page you can delete your email address from our records. Your keys keep working on the computers already activated, but you will no longer be able to sign in to manage them. The key itself stays on our system, but without your email we can no longer match it to you, so we cannot email it to you or find it for you. Save it first. This cannot be undone.

Once activated, FileVerdict keeps working without an internet connection for 14 days before it needs to check in again. Reconnecting at any point inside that window resets it, so ordinary disconnection never interrupts you.

This is the one network request that Settings’ Work offline switch does not stop — the activation limit is enforced server-side, so a switch that disabled it would be a licence bypass rather than a privacy setting. Everything else is covered; see Privacy and network access.

Annual licences do not auto-renew — they simply lapse, and the app locks until you buy again. This is stated on the pricing page rather than sprung on you at the point it happens. Lifetime licences do not expire.
